Balboa Island paint out..

Gabriele Baber / Comment on this

The last couple days were fun. I went out to Newport, Laguna, Crystal Cove, and Balboa Island with my friends, Lorraine and Carol. We spent the night at Lorraine's beach condo and just spent out time painting, and wandering around. It was a wonderful couple days, and we ended the excursion looking forward to getting together to paint again soon. That is the way it should be. Leave em wanting more is what I say..

So now, here is one of the pieces I did..leave em wanting more is not the theme for this piece though...less would have been better. This has to be one of the most difficult paintings I have done plein air ever. There was SO much information, no light as it was overcast. Still, I enjoy the challenge...and went for it. Lorraine and Carol were smarter though as they picked a simplified subject...If I had done the painting on an 18x24 perhaps it would have been better..who knows? Perhaps some day it will end up there. I am telling myself that this was a study and moving on.

To start with, I did some drawing with the brush, and then frusterated that it was not working, wiped it off, and started over. I had the forethought to take a pict about mid way, which is what you will see here.

You can see that it is a very overcast day..it never did clear up.

It is clear that there are some perspective issues on the building on the left, and that I have not yet put the verticals of the masts of the sail boats etc.

Here you can see where I stopped back in the studio.

This piece is 8x10 oil on panel and is available for $350. I hope you like it.
