Sketching at the Chino Air Show

Gabriele Baber / Comment on this

So, today, I got talked into tagging along to the Chino Airshow with my husband. He was certain that it had been "years" since his last visit. It was however, just last year, as I remember that I started this first sketch last year, or at least worked a couple minutes until the boys decided it was time to go. I still had the sketchbook, sadly, with not much added to it. (not good, will have to work on that) After mingling around for a bit "enjoying" all the airplanes, the airshow, was going to start. At that point I excused myself, and plopped myself down to finish off last years sketch.

Chino Airport has these charming executive hangars on the east end of the field. The one large hangar is a "club" of sorts I think, and, it makes a cute subject.

As my sketch was near completion, a gentleman came by, and asked if I minded if he watch for a bit. Sure..no prob....I usually hardly look up when I am working...but, after a short while he asked if I would sketch his "Car"...ah ha..time to look up and pay attention.  Apparently I was sitting on the back side of a race car booth. Excuse me world, but, if this car is a famous race car and this guy a famous driver, I would not know, so if you know, please let me know.. I told him I would sketch it after I was done.

After a bit, I settled in, across the way, so as not to be in the middle of the traffic...A good idea you would think but then, it put me on the other side of the traffic, which had the traffic between me, and the subject I was painting. It was almost like painting a moving target. People there, people gone, people back, truck there, truck gone, golf cart here, golf cart gone..You get the picture, not easy...airshow gets interesting, mass of people stop dead in front of me. Now I ask you, why do they not see that I am looking that direction with a paint brush in hand..seriously? Right dead in front of me..maybe 10 feet. Oh well. Artists do not have the right of way..we barely have rights, right? ha ha.

The timing was about right, as I was nearly done, when my husband came by to announce he was "just about ready to go". At that point I had realised that I had not drank nearly enough water, was burnt, and was feeling a bit shaky, so for the rest of the time, he kept shoving a soda in my face to drink. He has decided I need a camelback backpack for the hard core plein air painting... I guess, maybe. Actually, it might be a good idea. I wonder if I can get one for the "potty" too.. hahah. I am though, very grateful that the GIANT wasp, that took a shine to me, and kept coming around, landing on my leg did not decide to sting me. It is pretty creepy having those nasty things sitting on your knee, looking pretty scarey. Did I mention that I am extremely allergic to wasp stings? Yes..it would not have been pretty, had he stung me, and it is the reason I normally wear long sleeves and long pants when I paint.

Anyway, the gentlman was happy with the work, and paid me for it, as well as gave me four tickets to the drag races in Pomona in a couple weeks. Perhaps I am onto something. It could be that I should be plopping myself down at these events and sketching. Who knows what will pop up from it? Don't get paid much for little on the spot sketches..they are quick and dirty. People just don't pay the big bucks for a "sketch". ...but it was a trip paid for, and the next one is free, unless I can sell those tickets....Hello? Anyone out there interested?

You can see how far I am from the subject..and the potential for obstacles....

Here is a close up of the sketch for the race car guy. There is a LOT of advertisment on that car, and the best I could do is greek it in. Next time I bring some opaque watercolor...You can see how small the work is, as my hand is there for scale. The gentleman was pleased. He said, "I have all kinds of photos of my cars, and set ups, but don't have ANYTHING, like this".  You see artists...our work has to look like a painting, not a photo. It is nice to have someone appreciate my efforts to do just that.

It was a bit warm out there and I now have a sunburn...but hey...I would rather paint out there in the elements than anywhere else. I guess I am hooked...Heck...all in a day's work right?
